I've read that the lumpen still active in what remains of the teabagger movement was planning on disrupting townhalls around the country; guess it was true and one would have thought that the Sarah and Joe fiasco would have been enough for serious folk. Oh well.

I've read that the lumpen still active in what remains of the teabagger movement was planning on disrupting townhalls around the country.

And that means what they're saying is false.....? Non-sequitur.

Why is it that If you hold a liberal position on which many citizens disagree and you voice it enthusiastically, you're "speaking truth to power?" But if you hold a conservative position on which many citizens disagree and you voice it enthusiastically, you're "disrupting a townhall?"

Speaking of non-sequiturs, who said anything about liberals, let alone that when they disrupt events they are "speaking truth to power"?

I thought it was the tea party movement. What do you mean by "teabagger", Al?

That was great! May it continue!

Steve

Who talked about tea parties until it was brought up?

So, now we have another liberal tactic: allow your ally to bring up accidental characteristic of persons who bring up substantive arguments but then accuse your opponent of doing precisely that when he gets reductio on what your ally brings up.

Gadfly, all fly and no gad.

I'm perfectly consistent. You were correct to call out Al for his non-sequitur, but incorrect to make a non-sequitur of your own in the same post.

I would think that someone who frowns upon lumping all conservatives together (birthers, and sane ones alike), would do well to refrain from lumping all purported liberals together. As far as I can tell from this thread, any dissenting opinion is by it's very existence labelled "liberal."

I think the audience in this video is the consequence of a practice in which the President himself has significant expertise, "community organizing." Whether it involved teabags, I cannot say.

I realize that the link fails to show the hooliganism that actually took place but it has long been the case that getting ones news from Fox is a sure path to ignorance. I don't know what the non-sequitur is. These town hall shut downs have been orchestrated by the same Washington lobbying firm that was behind the tea parties. I assume those of who who don't depend on Fox know that by now.

The woman's comment is simply ignorant. I assumed that was obvious to the folks on this list but sadly not I guess so here's the problem. Medicaid can't be "broke" as it depends on annual appropriations from the states and the feds. It can be under-funded or funded just right or over-funded. It can't be "broke" if the funding entities are cutting checks.

Medicare is a single payer insurance program for seniors that will have problems in the future (2017 is the last year I heard) and these need to be addressed very soon but again "broke" isn't correct and mindlessly repeating it isn't helpful. Social Security isn't a major problem and can be easily fixed. It is nowhere near broke (this is a useful litmus test as anyone who claims SS is in serious trouble is either uninformed, misinformed, or lying.)

The Auto buy back program is "broke" in the sense that the appropriated funds have been expended but that is a token of its success and all that needs to happen is to increase its funding. The program worked - folks are buying cars and those new cars will use less gas.

I don't know why Dr. Beckwith assigns values to moi (and liberals in general) that he has no way of knowing that I (all other liberals) have but the whole "truth to power" meme is yet another instance. People who disrupt town hall meetings should be kicked out (arrested if necessary), I don't care what their political orientation is. There is a place for kicking up a rickus but shutting down meetings and seeking to intimidate others is simply wrong and should be dealt with harshly regardless of who it is.

What is going on here is obvious. Thuggery is thuggery and hooliganism is hooliganism be it from the left or right and it is currently coming from the right. At this point I have to wonder if history requirements are stong enough for non-history majors.

Back in the 1960s and 70s we saw highly intelligent and educated folks on the left slumming with scum and touting all sorts of insanity. Now we see it on the right. So sad. This goes way back. Back in the day, I had a paper route and used to chat with my customers as I collected door to door. One was a nice middle aged lady who was a grade school teacher. During one election cycle she revealed to me that the lettering for one candidate's bumper sticker was indicative of a sinister plot. It was sort of curvy (she saw this as Cyrillic) and it was part of a plot to accustom us to our coming Soviet masters. She was a member of the John Birch Society. Now we have folks with PhDs applauding political thuggery and seeing plots to kill off old folks where a simple reading shows otherwise.

Dissent stopped being patriotic on January 20th, 2009, 'round about noon, as far as I can see.
